N C 28782 3200 Relay Team State Champions The Polk County Lady Wolver ines 3200 meter relay team was first in the 2-A, 1-A State Track meet Friday at N.C State University in Raleigh. The relay team of Jessica Parkan, Calista Nodine. Leslie Carter and Karen Godlock ran the event in 10:04.3. The Lady Wolverines were fifth in the state with 30 points. The first ten teams were: 1. Murphy, 2. South Granville 41, 3. Randleman 40, 4 Surry Central 32. 5 Polk County 30, 6. Albemarle 26. 7. (tie) West Montgomery and Farmville 20,9. Mitchell 18, 10. (tie) Robinsville and Hendersonville 16 The Lady Wolverines were third in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 4:13 02 (Angela Curl, Calista Nodine, Karen Godlock and Jessica Parkan). The 800 meter relay team of Chanequa Canady, Jennifer Arledge, Sherry Rogers and Monica Rogers were fifth with a time of 1:50.73. Jessica Parkan was third in the 800 meter run. Her time was 2:23.59. Karen Godlock was third in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:26.89. In the boys event Kyle Cunningham was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6 ft 2 inches. June 3 at Harmon Field, Tryon Picnic lunch at 1 p m Bring your food and come for a good time of fellowship — Reporter 2HCPert ops In State Exhibit The art work of four Tryon Elementary students will be shown along with entries from 357 student artists statewide at the exhibit, “The Symbol of the Future," at the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, from June 4 to August 31 The four young artists are Cooper Strickland, grade one; Kim O'Conner, grade five; Ben Wolters, grade seven; and Matthew Jopp, grade eight. As students in the art classes taught by Clara Rogers at Tryon Elementary, their work was selected from among 400 entries at the school for submission to Raleigh The artists and their parents have been invited to attend a reception in Raleigh on June 4. in honor of "The Symbol of the Future" exhibit. In addition, the work of one young artist from each North Carolina's 100 counties was selected to appear on a limited edition poster produced in conjunction with the exhibit. The young artist whose work was chosen by Raleigh judges to represent Polk County in the poster is first grader Cooper Strickland The poster will later be made available for sale in all North Carolina Welcome Centers. The exhibit and museum poster have been funded by the Marv Duke Biddle Foundation Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, and the N C. Stale Museum of Natural Sciences Society. — Reporter
